Evidence, not hype.

NoLoop’s design is informed by research on digital self-regulation. It is not itself the subject of the studies below. That distinction is central to how we talk about the product.

What the evidence supports

Small friction can reduce automatic use. A preregistered randomized field experiment with 112 participants found that activating grayscale mode—a form of design friction—led to an immediate, significant reduction in objectively measured screen time compared with a control condition. The authors did not find an immediate causal effect on subjective wellbeing or academic performance. Read the original study.

An interruption plus a way out can be more effective than an interruption alone. The one sec studies tested a brief app-opening delay and an explicit option to quit. Their results support designing a real behavioral boundary, not just showing a motivational message. Read the original PNAS paper.

Personalized, autonomy-supportive boundaries can change time spent. In the 2026 Wellspent randomized controlled trial, 70 iPhone users received full-screen reminders after self-defined time limits, with a choice to quit or continue. The intervention reduced daily time on each participant’s most problematic app by about 29 minutes, but did not significantly reduce problematic social-media use or improve self-efficacy over the three-week study. What we do not claim

  • NoLoop does not “reset dopamine,” cure addiction, or make a clinical promise.
  • NoLoop has not been tested in the cited studies; those studies examine related interventions.
  • A pause will not work the same way for everyone or in every context.
  • Less time is not the only outcome that matters, and it does not automatically improve wellbeing.
  • More friction is not always better. If a setting feels punitive, users may turn it off or work around it.

The design trade-off

The purpose of friction is not to make every swipe irritating. It is to add a stopping cue where continuation would otherwise be automatic. That is why NoLoop offers choices: Gentle, Strict, Nuclear, Reflection, and individual controls for Reels, feeds, Explore, Stories, and video.

The best boundary is the smallest one that gives you a real chance to notice what you want. For one person, that might be manual play. For another, it might be a pause after five Reels or a full block during focused work.
